The Colorado Springs Utilities board voted 6-3 Wednesday night to close the entire coal-fired Martin Drake Power Plant by no later than 2035, a surprising sea change for a board that long has defended Drake. Board members Larry Bagley, Merv Bennett, Jill Gaebler, Keith King, Bill Murray and Tom Strand voted for the closure. Voting no were CSU board Chairman Andres Pico and members Helen Collins and Don Knight. The board consists of City Council members. The CSU staff and Customer Advisory Group (CAG) had recommended adoption of Portfolio D for the new Electric Integrated Resource Plan, an option that would have left Drake Unit 7 open indefinitely.
